Convert Your Garage to Livable Space with Garage Floor Epoxy Paint (Part Two)
Apr 19th 2018
In part one, we began our journey of converting a garage space into a new and livable home space and addressed what to do with the garage door and how to beautifully convert the garage floor. The recommended flooring is an epoxy paint or coating because it applies effortlessly to an existing concrete slab. Once the garage door and floor have been dealt with, you can move on to the other components of a garage remodel.
If you’ve began your the garage transformation and are searching for a flooring that is durable yet stylish, try an epoxy flooring. At Floorguard, you can create a trendy look with our flake and quartz effects that have been popular in the home remodel industry. In today’s post, we’ll further expand on turning your garage into a livable space, so follow along for insight on garage transformations.
Are heating and cooling necessary?
If you’re treating your garage remodel as just that, you’ll want to incorporate heating and cooling options within the space. If your garage is attached, it should be relatively easy to continue the HVAC system to the garage, but adding an independent system is also another excellent option. Insulation is another good idea before added heating and cooling, and for optimal energy savings, radiant heat can be installed on existing concrete.
Plumbing
This is one of the major remodeling projects you encounter in a garage conversion. You’ll need to contact a local plumbing contractor to assess and add plumbing lines if you need a bathroom or if you’re extending your kitchen.
Electrical
Generally a garage is on single circuit, so if you plan on increasing your electrical usage, adding at least a 20-amp circuit will be required. Your electrical needs and wiring will all depend on what your space is being converted into. If it’s going to be a kitchen and you use a lot high-powered electronics, you may need several circuits to keep up with your cooking!
Blending the new space
The most important thing you can do to appease the neighbors is to make sure the new space blends with your house if it’s attached. You want to ensure that it seamlessly blends and their is no discernment between what it once was and what it is now. Be sure you match the materials and colors and add beautiful landscaping to tie everything together.
Storage space
One thing to always consider before converting your garage into a new space is you lose valuable parking space and storage space. If your garage isn’t used as a storage space and you have minimal items stored, you could always consider a storage shed out back. Or, you could consider a garage sale or donating items to make room for the new space. Additionally, if you want to protect your vehicles, building a carport will shield them from the elements.
When you successfully combine all of the elements we discussed in part one and in today’s post, you’ll have a new space to accommodate a new kitchen, living area, or business. Remember to address heating and cooling, plumbing, and electrical while blending the space and creating alternative storage for your belongings and vehicles.
